There I was...

...inspecting the old tunnels of Suomenlinna, when suddenly...

Like with most old things, there is a ghost story connected to this place. It is about a cadet of the naval cadet school about a hundred years ago. The cadet and an officer's daughter were in love, but their relationship ended tragically in the young man's suicide, and his sorrowful spirit was left to wander along the school corridors. Reportedly, a figure wearing a military uniform of the era has been sighted in one of the class rooms of the cadet school.

We have a similar, tragic love story haunting the old halls of the university's oldest building downtown. It's a universal theme.

I love your photo.

What do you think ghosts are?

Yep, and no wonder similar ghost stories exist everywhere.

The sceptic in me says most of the so-called ghosts are just what old buildings cause in people's minds: creaking floorboards and doors, wind moving curtains and causing whistling sounds, light seeping in etc; coupled with people's imagination that such old places and the stories they've read ewoke. People are sort of willing to believe that there are ghosts around.

But I'm not completely denying the possibility that there may be something there sometimes. I do think there's more than meets the eye and what people absolutely KNOW in this world.

When I was young @ 9 or 10, living in the UK, I went to a school which still had bomb shelters still on the school property. So one recess, myself and a friend thought a brainy idea of breaking into one. (not the best idea) and when we did, we walked in, and down this long hallway, complety dark, was this floating antique candle holder with a lit candle. I remember this image like it was yesterday. We ran as fast as we could.

And no wonder you were freaked out, Grace! Quite a story!

As AM said, it does seem to be a universal theme.
We have the Lost Lemon Mine here in the mountains with tales of a mysterious stash of gold and the ghosts that haunt it.
We had a ghost in the halls of my old old high school. I think it was even named, but I don't remember.

Did you take the photo, Maria?

Dale, I indeed did take the picture. The "ghost", though, was one of the sea scout juniors who were doing a treasure trek. The treasure was hidden in that particular tunnel. :-)
